Digit 5 tries a safer way to share the factory floor

Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5, a new generation of its industrial humanoid robot. Its defining change is a safety architecture intended to let the machine work closer to people: detect a person, choose a lower-risk response, and communicate what it plans to do.

According to Agility's announcement, multiple sensors and proprietary software continuously look for people. The robot can avoid them, stop, or assume a seated position. Ars Technica independently reported the same behaviors and quoted Agility's technology chief describing different mitigations for different proximity conditions.

Why it mattersA mobile robot loses value inside a fixed cage
Traditional industrial automation often relies on guarded work cells. A legged robot built to move through human aisles and workstations is far less useful if every assignment requires a new physical barrier. Agility says Digit 5 is designed to reduce that dependence, opening a path from tote handling to machine tending, kitting, inspection and pallet work. Those broader workflows are a roadmap, not proof that every task is production-ready.
The boundaryDesigned for safety is not a blanket certification
Agility says an earlier Digit passed an independent field evaluation on a customer production line. It also contributes to ANSI/A3 TR R15.108 and ISO 25785-1 work for dynamically stable mobile robots and humanoids. The company itself describes those documents as under development. That is different from Digit 5 already holding certification under a completed global humanoid standard.
The real test is not whether the robot can sit down in a demonstration, but whether the full system responds predictably across thousands of messy workplace encounters.
What to watchDeployment data must carry the next claim
Customers and safety teams should look for evidence on missed and false detections, stop distances, recovery after an interruption, maintenance procedures and incident reporting. Digit 5's architecture is a meaningful proposal for shared workspaces; a durable real-world record will show whether it can replace barriers at scale.
