At the post-ceremony press conference, Jacob Tsimerman dropped a bombshell: he would join OpenAI to work on AI safety.
Tsimerman's mathematical pedigree is extraordinary. Born 1988, he represented Canada at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2003 and 2004 — gold both times, with a perfect score in 2004. He earned his bachelor's at the University of Toronto, his PhD at Princeton under Peter Sarnak, did postdoctoral work at Harvard, and has been a professor at the University of Toronto since 2014.
His Fields Medal citation recognizes his work in reshaping o-minimality theory into a foundational tool for arithmetic and complex algebraic geometry, and proving major conjectures including the Griffiths period-image algebraicity conjecture and the Siegel modular variety cases of the Andre-Oort conjecture.

A Fields Medalist joining an AI lab is not random. AI safety is, at its core, a mathematical problem: reasoning under uncertainty, formal verification, alignment proof structures, and mechanistic interpretability all demand the kind of rigorous abstract thinking that top mathematicians train on for their entire careers.
OpenAI's chief research officer Mark Chen confirmed the hire publicly, calling Tsimerman's mathematical talent and his 'rigorous, thoughtful approach to AI safety' deeply impressive. Sebastien Bubeck, himself a former Microsoft AI VP now at OpenAI and a mathematician by training, also welcomed Tsimerman.

The two Chinese winners, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, are the first Chinese nationals to win the Fields Medal in its nearly ninety-year history.
