An online study of 448 young adults found a similar body map for intense, laughter-inducing ticklishness across Chinese, Dutch and Greek language groups. The strongest shared regions included the armpits, sides of the trunk and soles, but the study did not identify a universal biological mechanism.

The sample comprised 149 Chinese, 150 Dutch and 149 Greek participants, with 50% women. Recruitment was online. The project was not preregistered, and its size was informed by an earlier body-map study rather than a formal power calculation.

The taskHow a sensation became a map

Participants colored front and back silhouettes to indicate where they had experienced intense tickling. They separately mapped touch sensitivity, pain, pleasure, self-touch and social touch, allowing researchers to test whether ticklishness simply copied another bodily sensation.

Machine-learning models distinguished ticklishness maps from the other sensation maps and generalized across the three groups and across individuals. That supports a stable behavioral pattern within this dataset, not a diagnosis or a dedicated neural pathway.

Five theoriesWhy some areas may be more ticklish

Tactile nerve density, skin thickness, arterial size and pleasure did not individually explain the map. Regions reported as less frequently touched were more ticklish, partly supporting Darwin's proposal. The association could run both ways: low exposure may increase surprise, or people may avoid an area because it is ticklish.

LimitsWhat the map cannot answer

  • Population: three groups of young adults cannot represent every culture, age or developmental stage.
  • Measurement: self-report and memory are not the same as controlled sensory stimulation.
  • Context: intent and consent were not tested, although they strongly shape how tickling is experienced.
  • Mechanism: the study maps experience; it does not locate a neural circuit or prove an evolutionary function.

The next useful studies would combine controlled stimulation with physiology, include broader ages and cultures, and separate wanted from unwanted touch. In practice, laughter should never be taken as proof that tickling is welcome.

The study provides a reproducible map of reported experience, not a final explanation of ticklishness.
