A study in *Scientific Reports* tested the same classical piano material at three speeds: 56, 106, and 156 beats per minute (bpm). In 26 healthy adults without musical training, faster clips were rated as more positive overall. But the feeling of activation did not simply climb with speed: arousal followed a V-shaped pattern.
What was measuredOne piano passage, two kinds of evidence
After each short clip, participants rated valence (how positive or negative it felt) and arousal (how activated they felt). The researchers also recorded EEG and examined power in different frequency bands plus synchrony between brain regions.

What it does not proveA signal is not a treatment
The experiment used one small, culturally narrow sample and one edited Mozart passage. Loudness, melody, familiarity, musical taste, and the listener’s context may also shape emotion. EEG frequency bands are group-level measurements of electrical activity, not a one-to-one readout of a particular feeling.
Why it mattersTempo is one lever in a larger emotional recipe
The result gives music researchers a cleaner variable to manipulate in future work. It may inform studies of music-assisted care or emotion-aware interfaces, but larger and more diverse experiments are needed before making practical or clinical claims.
The useful conclusion is not “fast music excites everyone.” It is that tempo can move different parts of the emotional and neural response in different directions.
